Haven’t we all at one time or another bought Gold either as jewelry or as an investment? But how many of us really know what to look for before buying Gold/ Jewelry. Keep reading to know everything about buying this precious metal before you splurge this festive season.
Factors to Keep in mind before Buying Gold
Purity of gold
Gold purity is measured in Karats. What is usually sold in the market is 14K, 18K, 22K, and 24K. Karat stands for the purity of Gold. The higher the Karat value, the higher the purity of Gold. Karat is measured on a scale of 0-24. 24K Gold is 99.9% purity. And since this is the purest form it is the most expensive. However, 24K is not really used for jewelry as it’s too soft and malleable but more for the purpose of investment.
24K Gold is also known as 999 depicting its purity. And 22K is commonly used in jewelry is known as 916.
Cost per gram
You need to check the current price of gold per gram, on reliable Bullion websites when you buy Gold jewelry as Gold prices fluctuate on a daily basis and your jeweler will quote the price according to that day’s Gold rate. You might have even heard your grandmother talking of Gold in terms of Tola instead of grams. What she means by One tola is 10 grams of gold.
Making charges
The charges payed to the jeweler for making the jewelry are always included in the cost of the jewelry. This is dependent on certain factors like, whether the piece of jewelry you are buying is machine-made or man-made. How intricate the design is etc. These charges are usually around 8%.
Terms and conditions for buyback
It’s very important to know the buy-back terms for your Gold jewelry from your jeweler. If you go back to sell or exchange your jewelry you might get less for it as the making charges will definitely be deducted from it and the Gold rate will be calculated at the rate of the day.
Hallmarked Gold
Before buying Gold in any form, be it Gold jewelry, Gold bar, or Gold coin, always make sure it is Hallmarked. Gold hallmarking is now the norm and has become mandatory from June 16, 2021.
An agency under the Government of India called BIS (The Bureau of Indian Standards) carries out this process to certify the purity of Gold. So Hallmarked Gold is certified and verified for its purity.
Four Hallmark Signs to Look for When Buying Jewelry
1.The BIS Logo
The logo for hallmarked gold is a triangle. So make sure to look for the triangle on your jewelry. According to the BIS website, it is the only agency in India approved by the government for hallmarking gold articles of any kind to ensure its purity.
2.Purity in Karat & Fineness (Any one)
22K916 – Equals to 22K
18K750 – Equals to 18K
14k585 – Equals to 14K
3.The Logo or Identification mark of the Hallmarking Centre
4.The Logo or Identification mark of the Jeweler
This is how your piece of jewelry should look.
And of course, don’t worry, it will be in a place where it’s not visible.
Digital Gold
If you are looking at Gold in terms of investment or if you are saving up for that gorgeous necklace you had your eyes on then Digital Gold is a good option for you. Especially during this time when one is hesitant in stepping out.
Digital gold currencies are issued by a number of companies, which enables users to pay each other in units that hold the same value as gold bullion. This is 24K 99.9% pure gold. You can sell your digital gold anytime after 5 days of purchase and is valid for up to 5 years after which you can either redeem or sell the Gold.
Some Companies like Tata’s Tanishq have also launched Digital Gold, where you can start by investing as little as 100 INR. It is a method of investing in 24K Gold on their website. You can exchange your digital Gold for physical Gold any time in their showrooms or on their website in the form of jewelry. You can also buy digital gold through popular wallets like Paytm, Amazon Pay, Google Pay etc.
Different Colors Of Gold
While looking for jewelry, have you ever wondered about the three popular colors of Gold that your favorite jewelry comes in but been too hesitant to ask the difference.
Gold, as we know, is very malleable so metals such as Nickel, silver, and copper are added to it to make jewelry. The alloy is what gives it yellow, white, rose, and other colors. The choice of color is a personal preference and has nothing to do with purity. For example, The most common alloy of rose gold is 75 percent pure gold to 25 percent copper, which makes 18k rose gold. Now you can pick up that beautiful rose gold necklace without any second thoughts.
Let’s take a look at the magic of Gold available online, created by well-known Indian Jewellers. Now you can shop for your favorite jewelry from the comfort of your home. Jewelers will send you what you select online and you can try them at home with ease and decide on your favorite one. They are even offering a discount on the making charges.
