As the year’s last quarter starts we eagerly await for the festival of Diwali to arrive. Diwali denotes the victory of light over darkness, and the Laxmi puja on that day seals that belief. The most auspicious time to do the puja is after sunset and the time or the mahurat is decided on the basis of the Amavasya tithi. Diwali in 2021 falls on 4th November.

According to Hindu belief, On Diwali, Goddess Laxmi, the Goddess of wealth visits her devotees and blesses them. And to welcome the Goddess the devotees clean their houses and decorate them. After the puja they light diyas and put on lights in every room to welcome the Goddess.

As Diwali nears, there’s so much to do. Looking for new clothes, doing up the house, looking for gifts, making rangoli and so much more. What sometimes slips the mind are the things required for the evening puja.

Keeping this in mind, we spoke to a few Panditji’s and curated a Diwali puja samagri list so that you keep it all ready in time without scurrying around at the last minute. Alternatively, you can ask your Panditji to come to your house and perform the puja/ Havan.

Laxmi and Ganesha are both worshipped in the Diwali puja. According to Hindu mythology, Ganesha was adopted by Laxmi and she declared to her devotees that any Laxmi puja done without Ganesh will not bring wealth and prosperity as Ganesha is the God of Wisdom which is required along with wealth to prosper.

Hence Laxmi and Ganesh are always placed together with Ganesha on the right side. Silver is taken out on Diwali and many homes have silver idols of the two Gods. Many buy Gold and Silver items on Dhanteras which falls two days before Diwali and keep it at the place of puja on Diwali.

Goddess Saraswati is also worshipped in some households on Diwali as she is the Goddess of knowledge

Red Cloth for Puja

Red cloth is used for covering the Asan or chowki. It is also used in the mandir where idols are placed. On Diwali you can place the red cloth wherever you are doing the Laxmi puja and place the Laxmi and Ganesha idols on it.

Gangajal

Sprinkle Gangajal ( Holy water of River Ganga) all over the house for purification before the puja.

 

 

Kalash

Preparing the Kalash for Diwali Puja

Fill the kalash with water, add a betel nut, a marigold flower, and some grains of rice in it. Then place a clean coconut on it. Place mango leaves around the coconut in such a manner that the tips of the leaves are touching the water inside the kalash and the other ends are drooping outside. Place the kalash on a bed of rice or surround it with beautiful marigold flowers. Make a Swastica or Om on the kalash with rolli and tie the red thread or molli on the kalash as well as the coconut.

Flowers or Toran

Of course, there is nothing like real beautiful marigolds. However, it’s not always possible to arrange for real flowers. Use these marigold torans to decorate your puja sthal.

 

 

 

Diyas

Diwali is incomplete without Diyas as is the puja. Place beautiful diyas around your puja Sthal to welcome Goddess Laxmi into your home. And one Akhand Jot to last all night.
